Hurricane info:
If you have frozen milk in your freezer, there are some things you can do:
Pack your freezer as full as possible, it will help everything stay frozen for longer. Freeze water bottles or flat Ziploc bags full of water NOW so you can fill any empty spaces.
Make sure that your freezer is as full as possible with milk at the center. A full freezer will stay frozen much longer than a partially full freezer.
Do not open the freezer during outages unless absolutely necessary.
Thawed breastmilk needs to be used within 24-48 hours after the last ice crystal melts.
If the breastmilk starts to thaw but still has ice crystals or is "slushy", you can re-freeze it.
If you are leaving home and want to be able to check that your freezer stayed on when you come back, try the "Quarter Trick". Freeze a cup of water and place a quarter on top of the frozen water. When you return, if the quarter is where you left it, the contents of your freezer stayed frozen.
If you use a breast pump, keep your pump fully charged while the power is on and try to locate a manual pump in case of outages.
